Enjoy Crawfish and Other Cajun Dishes at a Restaurant Near You

Many Americans enjoy dining out at local restaurants. While some may choose to visit fine dining establishments, 34% will enjoy a weekly meal at a casual restaurant. According to Bankrate’s recent survey, Millennials dine out even more often than other age groups. Their survey revealed that 54% of Millennial-age individuals eat out at restaurants three or more times a week.

The Popularity of Seafood

Over the past year, 33% of restaurants experienced an increase in seafood dish sales. After China and Japan, the United States is the third largest seafood consumer across the globe. In 2016, for example, an average of 14.9 pounds of seafood was consumed in this country.

One of the major reasons Americans eat fish and other types of seafood is due to its health benefits. According to a recent survey, 88% of the respondents indicated that this was one of the reasons they chose to have these types of dishes. Furthermore, seafood tends to have fewer calories, which is a plus for many individuals. A quarter pound of crawfish tails, for instance, just has 82 calories.

The Popularity of Cajun Cuisine

Cajun cuisine is popular with Americans that enjoy spicy, hearty dishes. This cuisine was brought to the United States and further developed in the 18th century by Acadian immigrants from Canada. In 1880, the first crawfish harvest was recorded within the United States. That initial harvest consisted of 23,400 pounds of crayfish which was valued at $2,140.00.

Some people may not be aware of the difference between Cajun and Creole cuisine. It’s important to note that the difference is more than the cuisine. These two cultures actually developed roughly 70 miles apart from each other, hence the different flavor palettes and other important cultural aspects.
